Your Spine

Your spine should be straight when you’re lying on your side (topmost picture). If the mattress is too hard (centre) or soft (bottom) it will be curved.

straight The key to a healthy sleep lies in the line of your spine. It should be straight when you lie on your side, and maintain a natural curve when you lie on your back. If your mattress is too hard or too soft, your spine won’t be straight — as shown in the diagrams . The memory foam mattress topper cushions your body from the main mattress, and moulds to your shape, supporting your waist and lower back.
hard If a bed’s too firm, you’ll get pressure points at the heaviest parts of your body. This reduces blood circulation and signals your body to turn over, while the muscles in your back and neck have to work harder to keep your spine straight. After a night of tossing around and working hard, you won’t feel refreshed and relaxed.
soft On the other hand, if a bed’s too soft it will take you more effort to move or roll over, your spine won’t be properly aligned and it can cause tension as your muscles work to compensate for the lack of support.
  • Using a pillow while sleeping on the back. When lying on the back, our memory foam pillows support the natural curvature of the cervical spine, providing a consistent level of support under the head, neck, and shoulders.
  • Using a pillow while sleeping on the side. When lying on one’s side, our pillows support the head and neck such that the spine maintains a straight and natural horizontal line. Weight is evenly distributed so as not to create unnatural bending or pressure.

Health Benefits

The health benefits are numerous, and medical trials & extensive testimonials have proven that sleeping on a Memory Foam mattress can help alleviate the following conditions:

  • Back & neck pain - correct spinal alignment brings enormous benefits to back pain or neck pain sufferers
  • Arthritis - less stress on the joints and a more comfortable sleep can help ease arthritic pain
  • Headaches/Migraines - Proper support will encourage the neck muscles to relax and help prevent tension headaches
  • Allergies – Our Memory foam is anti-microbial and dust-mite preventative. This makes our memory foam superb for people with allergies, particularly asthma. The covers are removable for regular cleaning.
  • Circulatory Problems - The weight of the body is absorbed by the memory foam preventing swollen calves & feet, chaffing and bed sores.
  • Stress - A deeper, more restful sleeping position helps to eradicate "tossing & turning". Correct alignment of the spine aids in restoration of the nervous system.
  • Pelvic and Hip Pain - A memory foam mattress will mould to the contours of the body, this reduces pressure reducing the risk of swollen hip joints or an aching pelvic area.
  • Memory Foam mattresses are also excellent during pregnancy. The mattress literally molds to the shape of your body, providing support wherever you need it the most, helping to relieve aching joints, and enabling you to easily find a comfortable resting position.
  • Perfectly Healthy People! - A memory foam mattress will give a higher level of restfulness whilst the body is rejuvenating during it's sleep. This will help to avoid some of the above conditions through prevention, and will mean a better quality of sleep and relaxation when you need it.

3 things to look for when choosing your Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Thickness   Density   Hidden Costs

Thickness

Full thickness Memory Foam Mattresses have about a 3” thick layer of memory foam. However, they do cost at least twice as much as a 3” topper. The same benefit can be achieved by laying a 3” Topper on top of your existing mattress (please note; your existing mattress should be in reasonable condition!)

There are cheaper mattresses around, but please check their thickness. Practically all of them are either 1” or 2” thick. A mattress of that thickness will squash to practically nothing as soon as anyone lies on it, and there will be no benefit from the wonderful qualities that memory foam has.

At a 3” thickness level, our Prima Comfort Memory Foam Mattress Toppers are thick enough to give a good level of support, and enable the unique qualities of Memory Foam to mould to an individuals shape and provide that support that is needed without any pressure points.

Conclusion: the best value for money, and maximum health benefit is achieved by choosing a 3” thick Memory Foam Mattress Topper.

Density

There are different density levels of the memory foam that makes up a mattress. Different companies advertise these at between 3lbs and 5 lbs per cubic foot (40Kg and 80 Kg per cubic metre). At the lower end the foam is very soft, and negligible amounts of benefit are achieved because the foam is easily squashed without having the chance to adapt to an individual’s body heat. At the high end of density (5lbs or 80Kg) the foam is so hard that many find it to be uncomfortable.

Conclusion: The best density, or level of hardness, is 4lb per cubic foot (60Kg/m³). This will provide a uniform level of support across the whole body, and will allow the unique qualities of memory foam to work their magic on your body overnight.

Extras

When checking for prices, look to see if there is a fitted cover included. These cost about £25 to purchase separately. The cover should not be too substantial. If it is too thick, then your body heat will not reach the foam, and the memory foam will not adjust to the shape of your body. Also, postage may or may not be included.

Conclusion: If the price includes delivery and fitted cover, then that should be the final price.
