| Are you now, or have you ever been, a sleepwalker? Do
you have problems with wandering away from your memory foam
mattress topper in the middle of the night?
Sleepwalking
Sleepwalking most often occurs in children before they reach
puberty. There are adults who also have this sleep disorder,
despite the comfort of their memory foam mattress topper. It
can be difficult to wake up the person who is sleeping
during this phase of sleep which tends to occur in the first
third of the night, during stage 3 or 4 of the sleep cycle.
People sleepwalking away from their memory foam mattress
topper can and do open doors, unlock doors, and navigate
around furniture and other obstacles, but are not actually
awake.
Danger of sleepwalking
Sleepwalkers are acting out a dream, and the brain has a way
of inserting or converting real objects (like a sofa) into a
dream object/image that needs to be avoided, so they walk
around it. If their dream turns menacing and they perceive a
burglar/monster/etc, they can and do attack or think they
are defending themselves, and they are quite strong because
by this time they have that adrenaline surge activated. In
other words, they can unintentionally hurt someone else, or
themselves.
Helping the sleepwalker
If you live with someone who habitually leaves their memory
foam mattress topper whilst still asleep, there are some
simple techniques you can employ to stop them getting into
danger. First, make sure all the outside doors and windows
are locked, and the keys put out of reach (but in a place
that is easily accessible because you need to be able to get
out of the house in a hurry in case of fire). Keep a safe
sleeping environment, free of harmful or sharp objects, and
try to give the sleepwalker a ground floor bedroom. Put an
alarm or bell on their bedroom door to alert you to the fact
that they are on the move.
Glassy-eyed
If you encounter a sleepwalker for the first time, it can be
a pretty disturbing experience. It’s the person that you
know, but not in a state that you know them. One famous film
from 1920 features a somnambulist (sleepwalker) who murders
his victims on the orders of a doctor who plants suggestions
in his unconscious mind. In most cases, episodes of
sleepwalking can range from quiet walking about the room to
agitated running or attempts to "escape." Typically, the
eyes are open with a glassy, staring appearance as the
person quietly roams the house. On questioning, responses
are slow or absent. If the person is returned to bed without
awakening, the person usually does not remember the event.
Try a topper
If you live with a sleepwalker who doesn’t currently have a
memory foam mattress topper, try buying a topper and see if
that helps them to stay where they belong, all night long.
